A Review of Irene Worth’s Happy Days

One of the most prominent aspects of the play is the fact that it imposes a sense of chaos. The characters are stuck in a desert where there is no daily cycle implying the lack of order in the universe. The character, willie is constantly uttering sentences that are not always coherent also indicating the chaotic nature of the play. The performance by Irene Worth handsomely captures the chaos within the Happy Day’s universe. The play is staged in a wasteland or a desert where there is no one else besides Winnie and Willie emphasizing the theme of desperation and loneliness. Irene Worth’s version of the play exhibits the sublime desperation and chaos with its depiction of dessert where there is nothing but lonely rocks, mountains and the sun.The actor embodies Willie’s hysteric and chaotic nature with success. Willie in the beginning of the play, gives her attention to a toothbrush and insistently tries to read something on the toothbrush. Her utter struggle to brush her teeth and rummaging her bag to find something imply her desperate attempt to find a daily routine and possibly a distraction in the face of such chaotic environment. The actor’s performance of Winnie catches that sublime  desire to escape from reality and displays it through her body gesture and speech. Her inclination to speak fast and comfort herself again indicate her desire to escape from reality. While this displays her as a delusional character, it also implies her wrecked mind-set. One of the sublime  gestures actor performs to display Winnie’s complex nature is lowering her voice time to time. In fact, why she is speaking so fast and so mechanical becomes more important than what she is saying. In those moments, the actor lowers her voice to indicate Winnie’s attempt to busy herself from the reality[ . Also, the insincere gestures she exhibits while Willie is comforting herself for instance by saying ‘its going to be a happy day[ , reinforces Winnie’s relentless struggle to find pleasure and peace in such a desperate situation. Willie apart from Winnie is portrayed to be primitive. In the play, he doesn’t talk much potentially indicating his lack of enthusiasm. The play portrays him to be a superficial character who is seeking sensual pleasures and is not as eager as Winnie is. Lastly, However, Willie’s actor’s inclination to look at Winnie emphasizes Winnie’s importance in the play. Winnie is important because it gives meaning to Willie’s relentless speech.  His main objective is to listen and this gives purpose to Willie’s speech and hence gives meaning to the play. Winnie ultimately is an admirable character who tries to keep going and not despair and her actor communicates Winnie’s unique and complex nature through her every gesture. Lastly, the performance of the actors successfully conveys these sublime aspects of Willie and Winnie.

Rhetoric in Hobbes' Leviathan

Hobbes’ Word Play Hobbes argues in favor of a monarch or an oligarch. To be more precise, he is in favor of the idea that multiplicity comes with complexity, harming the integrity of the state. In his opinion, men are mostly power-driven, greedy beings who must surrender themselves to a sovereign power that can spread the terror of punishment. According to Hobbes, this fear of punishment is the only effective motivating force that can keep people from brutally murdering each other. While this Hobbesian idea of the state portrays the sovereign’s subjects almost as though they are slaves, this essay will argue that Hobbes is not fundamentally against liberty and allows it within the constraints of laws. Hobbes's description of liberty suggests that only external impediments are against freedom. He states that liberty is “the absence of external impediments” (189) and, although these impediments may take away man’s power to do what he would, they do not prevent men from using th...

Rousseau on Legitimacy of State

Hobbes’ Paradox

Hobbes’ Paradox Resolved According to Hobbes, people are born with passions that ultimately lead them into a never-ending war. They require artificial power to stop killing each other. Unless such a power is erected, Hobbes suggests, leaving the state of nature is impossible since people are not inclined to cooperate and trust each other. The core reason why it is impossible to leave the state of nature is because of the innate passions people have that drive them to be constantly in conflict. Hobbes states that in the condition of nature, “any reasonable suspicion” renders any covenant or promise invalid since “bonds of words are too weak to bridle men’s ambition, avarice, anger, and other passions…” (196). Here, Hobbes highlights the importance of punishments, suggesting that without the motivating fear of punishments, covenants are practically invalid. It is also important to understand what Hobbes means by the condition of nature. He argues that because men are born equal, they...
