Freedom
is a very important phenomenon that has played a vital role in human history.
Wars have been fought over freedom, and the fundamental pillars of a modern
society structured their basis on the idea of freedom. Precisely, the core idea
of capitalism professedly bestows the individual the freedom to do whatever the
individual desires to, although there is a hefty price to it. Philosophers, however, conceptualized freedom
in a very unique way, and even some portrayed it as though it was an illusion.
To elaborate, they argue that freedom of choice is a sheer illusion in which
individuals find their alleged value. Although their contemplation on freedom
does not rely on a scientific standpoint, the essence of their argument sheds a
light on the nature of reasoning. They argue that all the decisions made by a
given agent stem from the past experiences of that agent emphasizing the
importance of experiences. The notorious pandemic Covid-19 granted me the
redundant leisure time to consider my decisions and how my decisions were
derived from my past experiences. It is for this very reason that I will try my
utmost effort to devote my crocked soul to acquire as rich experiences as
possible provided that this pandemic does not devour my soul.
Intellectual richness plays a
vital role in shaping the individual’s decisions, and hence devotion to
sophisticate one’s intellectual capacity carries utmost importance in widening
the individual’s perception. To convey their complex and controversial stance
on freedom of choice, determinist philosophers fabricate an allegory in which
they portray books as the vials of the author’s reasoning that accommodates the
authors’ concentrated experiences. They suggest that because people’s judgment
and reasoning stem from their experiences and knowledge, books are essential to
access other people’s experiences. In a way, they allude to the idea that
reading books is equal to watching the author live and tell his tales.
Essentially, what they argue is that acquiring an author’s experiences would
enrich the readers’ reasoning simply because the readers are indirectly exposed
to the author’s experiences. In the desperate times of Covid-19, the redundant
leisure time unveiled the true beauty of books. Books are the embodiment of
their author’s reasoning and they provide the only ground on which the
individual can interact with the author. More importantly, by bestowing the
reader the partial image of the author’s reasoning, books enrich the reader’s
perception which is the fundamental instrument for decision making. After
Covid-19 releases its firm grasp and unclench itself from people, it will be my
ultimate goal to make the nearest library my second home.
The
individual’s decision-making capacity is shaped by the quality and quantity of
the individual’s experiences and books can provide both of them with utmost
convenience. However, quality plays a
more significant role than quantity, merely because not all experiences can
teach important lessons. Given that time
is limited, it is best to utilize it as efficiently as possible. In other
words, it is best for the individual to not waste his time on unnecessary
experiences. The Covid-19 times where solitude prevailed and brought despair
with it, books stood as an illuminating light. The only experiences I was
exposed to consisted of me going to the bathroom and my room. In some cases, I
found myself staring into the abyss whilst eating. Thereby, books stood as the
most quality experiences that I can clench myself into.
In
conclusion, whether determinist thinkers are correct or not, their advice
proves to be useful. Covid-19 is not a mere virus, it is as though it is a
malicious alien’s science project that came to our world to test our strength
and we failed, miserably. Depression, loneliness, not taking a bath for a whole
week, those were offspring of this wicked virus. However, in desperate times,
the determinist thinkers offered me the most sacred knowledge on this planet.
It is that books are important and they grant you unique perceptions which
change the individual from being shepherded to an independent being that can
utilize his reasoning. Thus, as soon as Covid-19 pandemic is over, I will
devote myself to read as much as possible.
